A Communiqué From GTAJ HQ

This blog started in January and from the outset my intention was to commit to it for 12 months ... oh oh, that sounds ominous!
It had to stop one day, and I like the neat and simple symmetry of completely encapsulating a year of O&A shows. It looks tidier.
The last few shows of 2012 will be posted as usual ... go out at the top.

This posting had been scheduled for months, but with Ted's recent announcement it certainly adds a little more edge to proceedings.
Either way, with the field cleared, there should now be a surplus of motivation to new players that have considered entering the game. The holidays provide a few weeks of transition to allow volunteers to ready themselves and get set-up. Links can be posted here.
The blog will remain online as a full archive of the year. Cheers.

EDIT : To cheer everyone up, here's The Fall playing 'Blindness' live.
Don't worry, I am 100% certain there will be new replacement sources.

  3. Dam 1st Ted's and now this.....shitty news, if timmycakes88 on youtube stops, its all over folks, if you fund out of anyone else putting the show up can you let everyone know.
I have a XM subscriptions but going out to my car (no reception in the apmt)at night to record the beg. of the show fn blows.

    1. Tim downloads the file from here, changes the filename and re-uploads it back to HulkShare.

He'll need to wait for a new recorder too.

  4. Sorry to see you go, sir. But thanks for a great year. Out of all the questionably-legal sources of O&A I've frequented over these past few years, yours has been the tidiest, the most consistent, the fastest to download, and certainly the most dedicated. I'm certainly indebted.

    Thank you!!!

  5. Damn.. Here I was thinking I was going to cancel my subscription. So much for that.

    1. I am absolutely certain that some new people will start recording.

It's the cycle of life for O&A recording.

    2. Why is there so much turnaround? Does it just become a pain in the ass?

And I agree with the guy above. The pictures, the rundowns, and the immediacy in which you uploaded were great. Thank you sir.

      Delete
    3. The unreliability of Sirius network feeds mean that to absolutely guarantee never missing a show, you have to babysit the recordings.

That means 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. Grinding that out for 12 months is a big time vampire.

Chasing reliable storage providers, uploading problems, general site admin all adds to the workload.

My suggestion would be for 3 or 4 new recorders to get together, share content, and try to work out a schedule that gives them each some free time and some backup cover.

      Delete
    4. could someone just download from BMT and upload it here?
or is BMT gone and/or getting their feeds from you?

      Delete
    5. 6 hours? Does that include editing time? And jesus this thing was a full time job.

      Delete
    6. The editing is the easiest bit.

Each chunk is edited during the commercial breaks. After the last chunk is done, the file is put together and transferred.

You want to be up 20minutes before the show starts to avoid surprises, five hours of shows, and then you have to get the finished files transferred to storage sites and YouTube, so that tags 30 or 40 minutes onto the end.

It is really the "having to be near" thing that fucks you up. If Sirius streams could be relied on, it'd be a lot easier.

    8. That's what I was just thinking. Let's say nobody picks up the torch. Maybe the bar was set too high. What are the odds you'll sign up for another year of duty. I would definitely be willingly to throw in some money to keep it going.

    1. also, thank you for your service.
It made this year of work so much more productive being able to download it on the day of the show and listen to it right away rather than downloading it when I get home, converting it to M4B so I can play at 1.5x speed on my iPhone...

  12. Thank you so much for this wonderful resource of O&A shows. You've done an amazing service for everyone here. Now I'm either going to keep listening on PT or buy myself a Sirius XM subscription in case there's no one willing to take your place.

    In any case, many thanks.

  38. Uploads at 10:20 every day, 60 second downloads to my Chrome, delightfully vague show rundowns, bulletins every time the boys run a few minutes over 10:00, no commercials, no intro music unless it ties in to the first break topic...GT&J totally spoiled us. Big shoes to fill.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dude, didn't see it coming, but totally understand. You've explained the process, and believe me, I can understand if you've got to move on. The work involved is astronomical. Thanks for the year of shows!

  40. I feel like I just had an semi-amicable break up with a girl I have been dating for nearly a year.

  42. We'll go on a few dates with others, and it'll be alright, I guess. But every now and then we'll pull up a few posts, relive the magic we had together. We'll think about emailing, see how you're doing, but in the end we know it would just be too hard.

    ReplyDelete
  43. If the steps for the recording can be automated, I'd be willing to write some code to do it.

Of course the editing and uploading would still need to be done manually.

  92. Not enough can really be said about how well this site was put together. People have already mentioned all the good things, your punctuality, the beautiful rundowns, organization, consistency blah blah.

While I can fully understand any and all reasons you want to discontinue posting after the year's end, (even if you shut the site down last month with no explanation, we should all be so lucky to have been apart of this while it lasted) if you were to consider continuing, myself and I'm sure many others would donate more than you think. This site could literally not be run more professionally than it's ran, and unfortunately, I feel that after you sir, no website will be. Please re-consider with an option to donate, and I bet you will find that you are happily surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Like everyone else has already stated, "thank you".

    ReplyDelete
  94. Please create a donate button, you should be compensated. Even if you choose not to continue, there's a lot of people who'd like to say thanks.

Plus, we're all hoping that enough $ might convince you to continue with the site.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I'd pay for you or someone to continue this service. Regardless if someone has a subscription for Sirius XM, they still can't listen to it like a podcast. Since Sirius XM doesn't allow for a service like that I see no reason as why people shouldn't be able to make do with a service like you've given us.

  98. Lots of people starting to talk about money and donations to keep going ... 'fraid that's not gonna happen.

Like I said, in my mind this was always a one year gig. I've had the photo to be used in the last post sitting on my hard disk since June. I've had a while to make sure I wanted to stop.
It's one of those say what you mean, and mean what you say type vibes.

But more than that, there's been a principle running through this blog from the start: that there's a discernible difference in tone between sharing stolen audio with people who wouldn't get the chance to hear it otherwise, and taking that audio, other people's work, and looking to turn a profit and get paid off it.
Like poor ol' Johnny Casper says in 'Miller's Crossing', "Hell Leo, I ain't embarrassed to use the word - I'm talkin' about ethics."

I am not saying how other people should run sites, or start any internet battles with a week to go, I am saying for me, selling adverts or collecting donations isn't an option for this blog.

For those asking, I'll keep the GTAJ blog open, I've got some rough ideas for O&A related work to do with back-catalog. And I very deliberately chose to keep the GTAJ and GTAJDaily YouTube channels separate, there will hopefully be a few more sync-job/visual element videos getting made now that I have some extra time.

    GTAJ on YouTube

Cheers for the comments, it was a good run and I'm pretty satisfied with how it went. Don't worry. There were sites before this blog, and there will be plenty after it too, it'll work itself out. No-one will miss out.

  110. thanks for the work. i'm not worried about gettig the show (i'm at bmt), but i'm gonna really miss the rundowns and pics. i would copy paste the rundown in the lyrics so i could see while i was listening to the show. that was good stuff. out of all the o&a sites, this one is the best.

  113. Do we know anywhere else, or who is next in line to upload the show?

Definitely GTAJ was the best work I've seen anyone do.

    Thanks for the good run!

  114. Amazing job GTAJ. Thanks for all the hard work from a O&A fan in The Netherlands.

I would record, but I can not babysit the recording as I have a full time job and the show is live from 12 PM till 5 PM Dutch time.

I have tried, and the stream failed 4.8 out of 5 times, which sucks.

Again, thanks bro. You are the best.

  116. Ever since I have found this site a couple months ago I have downloaded every O&A. I work a shit job and knowing that I get to listen to O&A everyday made it alot better. Thank you so much for doing this for all of us. Good Karma is coming your way for sure.

  118. Absolutely breaks my heart, but I wish you all the best in the future and sincerely appreciate all the hours you put in. Got me through work more than a few times.

    Homerun GTAJ!

  119. Thanks for all the hard work. Your site is really well put together, and from your "not accepting donations" post I can see you're a class act as well.

  120. I think I have found a live stream at muze here:

    http://stream.spreadtheonavirus.com/livexm?MSWMExt=.asf

I have a sirius trial account, however the muze stream is not synched with the sirius stream. Can anyone confirm what the MUZE stream is sourcing from?

  121. Allright I think the stream I have is live. So, as long as this stream doesn't take a huge shit, I will try to continue GT&J's daily recordings at:

    http://gregorioantonioyimmy.blogspot.ca/

Note there is also a live mobile version.

Basically will be taking over for as long as I can, and will be posting around 11:00 am Est each day.

I am an audio engineer and very familiar with MP3's, quality and tech.

I'm not awake early enough to hear the show live. so I won't have those totally amazing show recaps that GTAJ was providing for us, as I am automating the recordings, I hear them pretty much when you do.

Please allow me to practice this for this week, I will use Hulkshare as well, and it's not very reliable.

    http://www.hulkshare.com/GregorioAntonioYimmy

That is all. Thanks @GTAJ for being awesome and for the past year of awesome listening!

If you have any suggestions, or if someone else has already taken over and I don't know about it please send me an email at:

    gregorioantonioyimmy@gmail.com

    1. Also, Zippyshare is a great bloat free site for these types of things. Built in player for streaming the mp3 as well if that's your bag!
